The Good Old Days

Last week the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art sent out an email press release to the effect that next year’s MoCCA Fest programming is being organized by Brian Heater and Jeff Newelt. Brian Heater, as you may or may not know, edits The Daily Cross Hatch, and works as a senior editor at PC Magazine. He has written for a slew of websites and magazines, including Spin, Heeb, and The New York Press. Meanwhile, Jeff Newelt is “Minister of Hype” for the webcomix collective ACT-I-VATE and a PR/social media consultant. His clients include Doug Rushkoff, DJ Spooky, Paul Pope, and Larry Marder. They sound like the kind of people who know people, and if they don’t know someone they will most likely know someone who knows someone. The press release confirms that the Festival will be held once again at the 69th Regiment Armory, located at Lexington Avenue and 25 Street, on the weekend of April 10-11, 2010. (An earlier version of this post said that the press release failed to mention where the event would be held. Sorry about that.)

This will be the first time since its inception that I won’t be playing a formal role at the Festival. In 2002 I met with Lawrence Klein and volunteered to help with the programming for what was then an experiment-in-progress rather than an alt-world tradition. From 2002-2009 I mainly worked on panels and special events, although I sat through numerous planning meetings that had more to do with setting up and dismantling tables than rounding up guest speakers. By getting involved with MoCCA and the Art Fest, I learned an enormous amount about comics, and the comics subculture, and met some cool people. (Sadly, I also found out what it is like to experience one damn technical snafu after another.) Most of the people I dealt with were exceptionally nice, and only a handful were difficult. If you must know, I have become especially fond of the folks at Drawn and Quarterly. And if you ply me with free liquor, I might even share some gossip and/or spill some secrets, such as the time Dan Clowes and I took a ride on the Puck Building elevator. Now, that is a great story.

In the interests of cultural preservation, this blog is pleased to present a list of Festival speakers and award recipients from 2002-2009. It is probably not a complete list (unannounced guests occasionally joined roundtables, etc.), and there are no doubt spelling errors and the like. The list has been sitting in a file on my laptop for the past several months, and is hopefully entertaining enough to merit some sort of informal web publication. In its own way it provides a snapshot of the “post-bang” comics explosion. Please let me know of any corrections that need to be made via the comments section.
