My reaction to hearing that Cathy Guisewite was discontinuing Cathy was not unlike my initial shock at the news of bandleader Mitch Miller's death: Wait, Mitch Miller was still alive? It's easy to forget that family daily strips, like network TV shows and top 40 radio, are still running.

It took me less than 20 minutes’ trial-and-error searching on the Internet to find that Charles S. Johnson was rather less well known as a cartoonist than as scholar, novelist, short story writer, essayist and critic, as a MacArthur fellow, recipient of the National Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature, and winner of the National Book Award for Middle Passage. *contains NSFW image.
