I've taught "City of Glass" at length in my comics classes. I agree that it is tremendously stronger than the source text, which ends up sounding like a libretto compared to a full (visual) opera: going from two dimensions to three, to change metaphors. I have detailed notes from my lectures. I assumed that most of what I had to say was obvious, but if you really think that few people "seem to know what to say about it," maybe I should do a post or two about it somewhere.

Speak for yourself! :)

The prose "City of Glass" novel is sheer glorious pleasure for me from start to finish. Sometimes after I read it I'm just dizzy with euphoria.

I actually felt this was better than Auster's actual novel. The novel(la?) seems to get so caught up in its postmodernism, its exploration of form and narrative, that it actually ceases to become enjoyable as anything beyond an experiment, (maybe thats what postmodernist literature is doomed to, but I still find I enjoyed Calvino's "If On a Winter's Night a Traveller" more than most ordinary novels).

Whereas in comics form, while still, as you say, leaving space for all kinds of postmodernist trickery, the introduction of imagery allows for a more accessible experience, its easier to 'see' the point of the stylistic quirks. Makes me want more post modernist comics!

There's a long interview with Karasik in Ganzfeld #1 that goes into City of Glass quite a bit, including how it started up. Worth looking up.
