And finally…

Let’s get the important stuff out of the way first. The three best sources for comics-related news are The Comics Reporter, Robot 6 and Bleeding Cool. They span the funnybook spectrum, with Spurgeon the least concerned with Wednesday Crowd comics, Johnston the most concerned, and Robot 6 somewhere in the middle. ICv2 offers the news from a retail/distribution perspective. Down the Tubes covers the U.K., while Sequential keeps track of Canada. Alan Gardner and Michael Cavna de-emphasize comic books and graphic novels (but don’t avoid them entirely) to concentrate on other forms of cartoon art, because really, someone should, you know?

Resources: Comic Blog Updates and Update-A-Tron keep track of the comics blogosphere. Bookmark them now. The Grand Comics Database catalogues comic books, and has a handy searchable database. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative are entirely worthy, comics-related charities. ComicsPRO is a trade organization for comics retailers. If you want to know how to make that inverted exclamation point in ¡Journalista!, you can always look it up.

Some bloggers specialize, mixing information and commentary. Bugpowder covers the U.K. small-press scene, while The Daily Cross Hatch focuses on small-press America. Daryl Cagle covers editorial cartoons. Good Comics For Kids is all about what it says on the marquee. ComixTalk and Fleen round up the webcomics news. When Fangirls Attack is a feminist comics-fan linkblogger. Graphic NYC documents the Big Apple, Strippers Guide digs into comic-strip archeology, and Neil Cohn obsesses over academic theory and experimentation.

(Edited later to add:) Almost forgot: If you want to learn about the Philippines’ long and proud komiks tradition, Gerry Alanguilan‘s the guy you want to talk to. He pretty much owns the topic. (Sorry, Gerry.)

Digging into the blogosphere, Comics Comics is easily the most essential source for commentary and criticism, with Paul Gravett in close competition. Also worth a look: Attentiondeficitdisorderly, Comics Worth Reading, The Cool Kids Table, Death to the Universe, Factual Opinion, 4th Letter, Graphic Novel Review, Read About Comics, Savage Critics and Trouble With Comics.

Anime News Network is the 800-pound gorilla of English-language Japanese pop-culture news sites, while Japanator is a smarter Anime News Network, About Manga is more user-friendly, Same Hat is just weird, Sankaku Complex is just perverted, Okazu covers yuri culture, and Manga Blog links to all of it. Also recommended: All About Manga, MangaCast, The Manga Critic, Manga Xanadu and Precocious Curmudgeon.

There are a variety of professionally run news sites catering to the great Direct Market reservation, including The Beat, Broken Frontier, ComicMix, Comics Alliance and iFanboy. Mindless Ones do commentary well.

And with that out of the way, well, there’s not a lot to say that hasn’t already been drunk-Tweeted, but let me do it sober this time.

In the last ten years, I’ve thrown away a career, assembled porn mailers, drawn comics, written essays, raised money for a homeless cartoonist, organized Seattle’s worst benefit concert ever, digitized hundreds of hours of cassette tapes containing (I think) the largest oral history of comics in the United States, started a weblog, kick-started a blogosphere, attended a bunch of geek festivals (including four San Diego Comic-Cons in a row), edited a magazine, interviewed cartoonists whom I greatly admired, got quoted in major newspapers on topics in which I was often unqualified to hold a quoteworthy opinion, became several bibliography citations, became a footnote, became an Internet micro-celebrity, became a Wikipedia entry (it reads “mostly harmless”), helped facilitate a manga line and spent a full four years working from home in my living room, naked! And I got paid to do all of it.

Jesus Christ, do I ever have nothing to complain about. It’s been a blast. Alas, it’s been obvious for some time now that the magazine can’t support a full-time blogger. I’m grateful to Gary Groth for refusing to pull the trigger for as long as he has. I’m also grateful to him and Kim Thompson for giving me the opportunity to work with people like Michael Dean, Kristy Valenti, Adam Grano, Milo George, Peppy White, Ilse Driggs, Michael Dowers, Carrie Whitney, Eric Reynolds, Greg Zura, Jen Ralston and everyone else at Fantagraphics. Working with you guys justified my existence. Thank you all for putting up with me. Thanks also to everyone who blogged, e-mailed and tweeted their best wishes. It was incredibly flattering.

My next act will be… nothing. A good two weeks of nothing, at least. Then we’ll see. But first: Nothing. After ten years, I think I’ve earned it.

FIRSTNAME@LASTNAME.com, by the way.

“Much has been written these days about the first artists to compose the whole page as a visual unit, such as Jack Kirby or Mort Meskin. Together with Will Eisner, Nordling was one of the artists promoting the use of the title lettering in the splash page. I guess Eisner started it, but there seems to have been a rivalry about who could come up with the cleverest design. And my money isn’t necessarily on Eisner. The comic book industry lost a great artist when Nordling decided to do something else in the early fifties.”

“People always assume my work is autobiographical. One! Hundred! I mean, I struggle with it. You know, it’s not one of those little cute things like that Zoloft commercial, where they have that little creature, that little jellybean, looking sad. It ain’t like that. It’s more like having swallowed a running chainsaw, and you don’t know what to do or where to turn.
“The issue overall is only unintentionally funny really, unless it’s a masterpiece of delicate deadpan humour which — if true, is going to make the next few hundred words a bit pathetic — but it’s still [J.H.
“And yet, there was another crop of comics that came out this year from ye old Big Two. Not the bad ones–the filler tie-ins, the banal mini-series, the things about vampires in Ancient Rome. I’m totally talking about me right now!–bought just so you could see if what you’d heard was true, if there really was a Santa Claus, and if he really was getting castrated on a bridge by a team of Girl Scouts after denying them the ponies they so required.”

“Getting new readers into comics is something that we are horrible at as an industry. I love Free Comic Book Day, and it is a spectacular event, but there is nothing we have that helps explain to people that we have new comics every week. New stories every month. We all assume that people know how to read periodical comics, whether print or digital, and let me just use a big word here, those are fallacious assumptions! We need to dig deeper right now than just seeing digital as the panacea to all of the comic book industry’s problems.”

“The small format and 52-page length make it feel reminiscent of a Jeffrey Brown book, as does the somewhat sketchy style utilized here, as opposed to the artist’s usual clean brush storkes. But, the storytelling is all Tomine.”

“It’s [...] fair to say, perhaps, that the art in Stigmata follows the writing — it’s messy and personal and organic and, at times, achingly beautiful — but it does more than that: Mattotti’s line is amazing, so filled with personality and intensity, at once angry and fiercely controlled, and used in the service of some amazing draughtsmanship and visionary visuals.”

“I was not very much impressed with an introduction to a graphic novel I recently read; it was just a series of e-mails back and forth between three people jokingly passing responsibility along to one another until space and word count ran out. Then, of course, I was asked for an intro (by ComiXology’s own Shaenon Garrity, for her upcoming Narbonic omnibus), and I struggled with it. I still think their intro was terrible, but now I understand some of their (probably not-quite-feigned) reluctance. It was the hardest writing assignment I’ve had in a long, long time.”

“I definitely prefer reading fiction to reading comics, except for a very small percentage of comics. And when I was a teenager I wanted to be a fiction writer. I’m much more interested in films, too. I feel like I’m more interested in the potential of comics, rather than what they’ve already accomplished, whereas with films and novels I’m interested in what they’ve already accomplished.”

Life in interesting times

Early this morning, the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly’s general affairs committee voted to approve a revised bill, based upon earlier drafts that targeted comics, animation or videogames featuring characters under 18 years of age depicted in sexual situations, but has been greatly expanded to regulate the sale of works that “unjustifiably glorify or exaggerate” depictions of a wide variety of socially unapproved sexual activities. A vote will be held on the bill in the full Assembly on Wednesday, where Democratic Party of Japan legislators have already agreed to support its passage — with the addition of “a supplementary resolution [...] which requests the prudent application of the law.” (One wonders what Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara would have to say about that.) Meanwhile, Japan’s leading manga publishers have vowed to boycott next year’s Tokyo International Anime Fair in response.

“I think the real factor in regards to business in comics is what region of the world you are in and how original your voice as creator, storyteller, is. In my experience, especially in regards to the UK, the market is so small that I don’t really regard it as a successful business venture currently, and as a medium it can be hard to get your own idea published as everything is dictated by commerce. Whereas in France from what I can see/read/hear for example, the comics culture flourishes to the equal level of art, because it is art, and they understand that there.”

“The change could be Prison Pit, it could be Angry Youth # 14, but more likely, those are mere outgrowths of a more exciting development: he’s moved on. He’s written the best shit joke, his best rape gag, his funniest story about two kids who kill one another. What he’s doing now — toying with a formula he arguably perfected back in the early pages of Comics Book Holocaust — is exploring the tangential gags that made that last issue of Angry Youth such a revelation.”

“Kyle Baker used to draw with pencils and ink and white out and paper back in the 80s. According to his high school classmates, he used to ink Marvel Comics assignments on the NYC Subway trains. Baker would later describe this inking technique to The Comics Journal as ‘expressionistic.’ By the mid-90s, he started toying with computers and he hasn’t looked back since. Much to a few purists’ chagrin, he’s almost completely abandoned the old ways in order to make room for the new.”

“At some level, the book has a Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland notion running through it. Young kid who doesn’t care for his/her home life falls into a magical realm, and learns to appreciate how great home really is. What strikes me as somewhat different here, though, is that, while Francis is surprised and apprehensive about this new world, it bears a number of similarities to his old world.”

“I met Gary Arlington during that first trip in November, 1978, a trip which began with the headlines about the Guyana suicide ‘massacre’ hitting front page newspapers visible everywhere in the city, and ended with Tom driving us to the airport as a high-speed car chase was happening downtown (as we could hear on Tom’s car radio): Mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk had just been assassinated, and their assassin—recently retired city supervisor Dan White—was being pursued by police.</p?

“Like I said, a memorable trip.”

“While the story is a good one, much of the fun to be had comes from Renier’s detailed environments, which are beautifully depicted in a style similar to European artists like Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim, even down to the album-size dimensions.”

Please include an online link to which I can send people for more information. No sales-only events, please — it’s nice that you’ve marked things down at your store or website, but I won’t be listing it here.
