The Wolverton Bible: The Old Testamant & Book of Revelation Though the Pen of Basil Wolverton collects illustrations Wolverton made for various publications of the Worldwide Church of God, founded by Herbert W. Armstrong. Armstrong, who had a background in print advertising, pursued an eccentric theology that he claimed was personally revealed to him by God. Wolverton first heard Armstrong through his radio broadcast, and began corresponding with him, initially as something of a skeptic. Armstrong won him over, however, to the point that Wolverton was ordained as a church elder in 1943. His first commission from the Church was to make illustrations derived from the Book of Revelation; eventually, he would go on to illustrate the Old Testament for two of Armstrong’s magazines, and those illustrations were collected into six volumes, between 1961 and 1968, as The Bible Story. The Revelation and the Bible Story drawings make up the bulk of the Fantagraphics collection; there’s also an appealing selection of Wolverton’s humorous spot illustrations for Church-affiliated publications.
