The comics festival AltCom in Malmö is already under way, with exhibitions all over the city, an alternative film festival last week and a comics anthology published and handed out for free. This weekend is the main focus, though, with a big fair with publishers, authors and writers exhibiting, panels and lectures on stage, a big party and so on.

The themes for the festival are Sex and War, to mark that this is really a festival for grown ups, in contrast to the festival I Seriernas Värld (In the World of Comics), which is a biannual comics festival for children, held in Malmö since the year 2000. This theme is, among other things, shown in the anthology, which is in English and contains comics from many of the international guests as well as from a plethora of Swedish artists. The cover was drawn by American Ho Che Andersen.

The exhibitions that are already in place are Mus, Mouse, Maus, at the City Library, showing examples of Swedish and Danish artists commenting on Art Spiegelman’s masterpiece; Wormgod: Zombies, at Panora, is a an exhibition where you are supposed to don a head-lamp and then walk into a dark room full of zombies; Swedish Comics Sin, at Makeriet, shows examples from the recently published anthology with the same title, with comic on the theme of sex by young Swedish artists.

This weekend will see the opening of another two exhibitions: C’est Bon Kultur’s Panorama III: Super Mario, at Spegeln, with artists form the collective C’est Bon interpreting the classical computer character, and En hjälpande hand (A Helping hand), at Form/Designcenter, with art by Lars Krantz from the book with the same title, debating the Swedish arms export.

The line-up of international guests is impressive, with artists form Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Great Britain, Portugal, Slovenia and the U.S. Many of these will give lectures or take part in panel discussions during the weekend. Well, that’s the basic info. It all looks great, and I will try to cover as much as possible here reports from the festival. So stay tuned. More info at the official site.
