Karikaturka 2010 exhibition offers an excellent selection of cartoons from Turkey, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland. The exhibition has been launched on July 9 and will stay open until August 6. I am walking through the halls an impressive art gallery in Tophane, Istanbul, the cartoons are presenting the various perspectives on the “Danish Cartoon Crisis.” I think the most interesting aspect of the exhibition lies in the European cartoonists’ different approaches towards common themes such as religion, peace, European culture, and integration. The most hilarious cartoons are about the Europeans’ fear of Turkey’s accession to the European Union. This is a great opportunity for us to see the EU cartoonists’ mostly stereotypical images about Turks, such as “flying carpets”, “fez” as a Middle Eastern hat etc. I will try to discuss the Oriental images of Turks on cartooning later.
