SVA Student Catherine Small

For the past couple of years I’ve been teaching a course on Comics Criticism at the School of Visual Arts (SVA). In the fall I had 26 students, including a couple of critics-in-formation. We spent a lot of time talking about McCloud, Hatfield, Mitchell, Harvey, Kannenberg, Wertham, Dorfman, and Andrae, as well as analyzing comics stories by Brown, Schulz, McGuire, Holdaway, Rooum, Bolling, Haspiel, and others.

Every semester I give in-class final exams, and every semester students doodle on the blue books. Most of the time the doodles are pretty ordinary, but this semester I received some really nice impromptu images. Here are two favorites, by SVA undergrad Catherine Small. From the cover:

And from inside her blue book:

For good measure, here’s a classroom sketch by recent Marymount Manhattan graduate Andres Garcia. I had asked the class, “What are they teaching you people?” when I found out that none of my students recognized the name Eugene Debs. Coming next: the return of Phil Evans.

I’d love to see the syllabus for the comics crit class, Kent… Any chance it’s online somewhere?

Thanks for asking, Derik. An earlier version is on the NACAE website. I can also post it on this site if you think anyone would be interested…

I don’t see it on the NACAE (“comics and animation”?) I’m mostly interested in the readings you use.

  4. Kent Worcester says:

Argh. Turns out the version on the NACAE site is older than I anticipated. In January I’ll post the Comics Criticism syllabus on tcj (the syllabus is on my computer at work). Thanks for your interest.

Why can’t every TCJ image be as large as these?

Good question! But I’m afraid I’m not qualified to answer. I’m just getting the hang of this wordpress software myself…
